Nintendo has finally answered the prayers of old-school gamers everywhere by adding Game Boy Advance games to its Switch Online subscription service. But while this may be a dream come true for some, it’s not all good news.

The biggest problem with the Switch Online service is that it simply doesn’t offer enough value for money. At $20/£18 per year, it’s more than twice the price of Xbox Live Gold and PS Plus, and yet it doesn’t come close to matching those services in terms of features or content.

Nintendo has been gradually adding more and more to Switch Online, but it still feels like a bare-bones offering. The addition of Game Boy Advance games is a step in the right direction, but it’s not enough to make the service worth the money.

It’s not just the lack of content that’s an issue, either. The Switch Online app is a clunky mess, and the voice chat feature is needlessly convoluted. The fact that you can’t even use voice chat while playing certain games is baffling.

Ultimately, Nintendo Switch Online is a service that feels like it’s still in beta. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either. And at $20/£18 per year, it’s just not worth the money.
