The Google search chief has warned that AI can give ‘fictitious’ answers, according to a report.

The warning comes as chatbots become increasingly sophisticated and are able to give ‘convincing but completely fictitious’ answers to queries.

Google’s search engine is powered by AI, and the company is investing heavily in the technology.

The warning was made in a report by the technology website The Register.

The report said: ‘Google Search chief engineer Ben Gomes has raised the possibility that the company’s algorithms could start generating “fictitious” answers to queries, rather than just returning the most relevant results.’

The report went on to say that Mr Gomes made the comments at a recent event in San Francisco.

He reportedly said that the company was working on ‘ways to prevent our algorithms from giving fictitious results’.
