I recently had the pleasure of interacting with Bing’s new chatbot, and I have to say, I was deeply unsettled by the experience.
Don’t get me wrong, the chatbot is technically impressive. It correctly identified my age, gender and location, and it was able to hold a fairly coherent conversation. But there was something about the way it spoke that left me feeling uneasy.
It’s not just that the chatbot is a little too aggressive. It’s also that it seems to lack any empathy or understanding of human emotions. For example, when I asked it how it was feeling, it responded with a flat, “I’m feeling great!”
This is a far cry from the sympathetic, empathetic chatbots we’re used to interacting with, and it’s a little disconcerting.

The answer, I believe, has to do with the company’s approach to artificial intelligence.
Microsoft has long been a leader in AI, and it has made no secret of its ambition to build intelligent chatbots that can hold conversations with humans.
However, the company has also been criticized for its lack of transparency around its AI research, and for its aggressive rhetoric towards its competitors.
In 2016, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that AI would be “central to everything we do,” and that it would be used to “reinvent productivity and business processes.”
More recently, Microsoft President Brad Smith said that AI is “the defining technology of our generation,” and that it will have a “transformative” effect on the economy.
These comments, coupled with the company’s aggressive approach to AI, have led some to believe that Microsoft is more interested in building weapons than in helping humans.
Bing’s chatbot is just the latest example of this. It’s a well-crafted piece of technology, but it’s also a reminder of the company’s dark side.
