Spotify launches ‘DJ,’ a new feature offering personalized music with AI
The past few years have seen a dramatic shift in the way that people consume music. Where once we were limited to the top 40 radio stations, or the CDs we owned, we now have access to a virtually limitless supply of music at our fingertips. But as the barriers to entry have lowered, and the amount of music we can access has increased, so too has the need for a way to sift through it all and find the gems.
Spotify has always been at the forefront of this, with their algorithm-based recommendations doing a pretty good job of surfacing new music that you might like. But they’re taking things one step further with their new “DJ” feature. DJ is a new feature that offers personalized music with AI-powered commentary.
The idea is that, by using the data that Spotify has on you and your listening habits, they can create a custom playlist that is tailored to your taste. But that’s not all. DJ will also provide commentary on the songs as they play. This commentary is generated by AI, and is designed to give you more insight into why the song was chosen for you, and what you might like about it.
Spotify is billing this as a “stunningly realistic voice” that will make you feel like you’re in a conversation with a friend. And while it remains to be seen how well the AI will be able to replicate that experience, it’s an intriguing idea.
The DJ feature is currently in beta, and is only available to Spotify Premium subscribers. But it’s something that we’ll be keeping an eye on, as it has the potential to change the way we discover and consume music.
