Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC review: gothic roguelike nostalgia

Back in August, I remember writing about how much I enjoyed Dead Cells, an roguelikelike Metroidvania platformer with tight controls, interesting mechanics, and a serious challenge. It was one of my favorite games of 2018. Imagine my surprise, then, when I saw that the game was receiving a new DLC pack, called “Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania.” I was intrigued.
The new DLC pack does not disappoint. It adds a slew of new content, including a new environment to explore, new enemies to fight, and new weapons and abilities to use. In short, it is everything that a fan of the original game could want. And, like the original, it is difficult. Really difficult.
But that’s part of the appeal, right? Dead Cells is a game that demands your attention and your time. It is a game that rewards patience and perseverance. If you’re looking for a quick fix, this is not the game for you.
But if you’re looking for something that will challenge you, something that will make you think, something that will test your skills, then Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania is definitely worth your time. It is, quite simply, one of the best Metroidvania games I have ever played.
