‘realityOS’ platform referenced in open source code from Apple ahead of Reality Pro mixed reality headset

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about Apple’s mixed reality headset, but it looks like there’s finally some movement on the project. 9to5Mac has found references to a new platform called “realityOS” in Apple’s open source code.
This is the first time we’ve seen any mention of realityOS, and it’s not yet clear what it is or how it fits into Apple’s mixed reality plans. However, the name does suggest that it’s a platform for developing mixed reality applications.
Mixed reality is a umbrella term that covers both augmented reality and virtual reality. Apple has been rumored to be working on both an AR headset and a VR headset, but it’s not clear if realityOS will be used for both or just one of them.
The references to realityOS were found in Apple’s open source WebKit code. WebKit is the engine that powers Safari, so it’s likely that realityOS will be used to develop web-based mixed reality applications.
This is just a small clue, but it’s an intriguing one. It’s clear that Apple is still working on its mixed reality headset, and realityOS could be a big part of that. We’ll have to wait and see what Apple reveals next.
