Amazon layoffs will shut down camera review site DPReview.com after 25 years

After 25 years, Amazon has decided to shut down DPReview.com, a website that provided in-depth reviews of digital cameras and photography equipment. The news was announced in a blog post on the site, which cites “the challenges of the past year” as the reason for the closure.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of DPReview.com,” the post begins. “The site has been a valuable resource for photographers for more than two decades, and we want to thank all of our contributors and readers for their passion and commitment.”
The team behind DPReview.com plans to continue their work on other projects, including PetaPixel and The Phoblographer. As for the website itself, it will stay up for the time being as an archive of sorts, but it will no longer be updated with new content.
This is a sad day for the photography community, but it’s also a reminder of the harsh reality of the online world. While DPReview.com was able to build a loyal following and create a successful business, it couldn’t survive the cuts that Amazon made to its own camera review site.
It’s a sign of the times, and a sign that we need to be more wary than ever of the ever-changing landscape of the internet.
